The Travel Apps and Websites That Save Me Money
Trip.com for flights, 12Go for Southeast Asia transport, GetYourGuide for tours, Wise for your money, Airalo for data, and SafetyWing for insurance. These six tools cover everything.
You do not need a travel agent. You just need the right tools and a bit of confidence.
I have been booking all of my own travel for years now and these are the exact apps and websites I use for every trip. Flights, hotels, tours, transfers, money, data, insurance. I have got a go-to for each category and I am sharing all of them here.

Booking your own holiday has never been easier. Comparison sites, affiliate codes, and instant confirmation straight to your phone mean independent travel is faster, cheaper, and honestly more fun than going through a high street agent.
This is the complete list.

✈️ Flights and accommodation
::img[flights_hero]
These are the platforms I open first when I start planning a trip.
- Trip.com, my go-to for quick flight comparisons without bouncing around multiple tabs. Clean interface and usually competitive on price.
- 12Go Asia, the most helpful app for travel across Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam. You can compare by transport type, so ferry versus bus, which is brilliant for island hopping.
- Expedia, useful for longer trips or multi-stop itineraries. Good for bundling flights and hotels.
- Hotels.com, reliable for hotels worldwide. Has a good mix of independent and chain hotels at all price points.
- Hostelworld, the best platform for budget hostels. Perfect if you are travelling solo and want to meet people on the road.
- Traveloka, very useful for Asia travel, especially for flight deals and packages.
- Tripadvisor, I use this constantly for reviews before booking anything. Read recent reviews, not the headline star rating.

🗺️ Tours and experiences
::img[tours_market]
Booking tours in advance saves money and avoids last-minute sell-outs, especially for popular spots.
- GetYourGuide, my most used activity booking app. Global city tours, island trips, cooking classes, guided hikes. Use code ALLCHECKEDIN5 for 5% off worldwide trips booked on the app.
- Klook, great for attraction tickets and transport passes, theme parks, city cards and airport transport.
- Viator, excellent for unique, local experiences. Has a reserve now, pay later option which is handy when planning ahead.
- Go City, city passes that bundle multiple attractions together. Worth looking at for cities like London, New York, or Dubai.

🚌 Transfers and transport
::img[transfers_airport]
Landing in a new country after a long flight is stressful enough without scrambling for a taxi. Getting transfers sorted before you land saves a lot of time and a lot of hassle.
- Holiday Taxis, choose your arrival airport and vehicle size and the driver is waiting for you. Brilliant for families and late-night arrivals.
- GetTransfer, you post your route and drivers bid with prices. Good for getting a competitive rate.
- Welcome Pickups, drivers meet you with name cards and help with luggage. Friendly service.
- 12Go Asia, also covers trains, buses, boats and ferries across Southeast Asia. One app for everything when you are on the road in the region.
Top tip: I also search GetYourGuide for airport bus tickets. Sometimes as cheap as five euros.

💳 Travel money

Bank fees abroad add up fast. These two cards cut them down significantly.
- Wise, great for holding multiple currencies with fair rates and transparent fees. I use this for all my spending abroad. No nasty surprises when you check your balance.
- Revolut, good for budgeting and real-time spending notifications. Useful if you want to track your daily spend while travelling.
I would recommend setting up Wise before any international trip. Load it in your home currency and convert as you go at the real exchange rate.

📶 eSIMs and data
eSIMs have changed how I travel. Install before your flight, land connected, no airport SIM queue. These are the three I would consider.
- Airalo, covers over 200 countries. My top pick. Plans are affordable, the app is straightforward, and you can get regional Asia plans that cover multiple countries in one purchase.
- Saily, easy to use, simple plans, good for first-time eSIM users.
- Drimsim, works across multiple countries without swapping plans. Good for longer multi-country trips.

🛡️ Travel insurance

Do not skip this. Medical emergencies abroad cost thousands. Read your policy so you know exactly what you are covered for.
- SafetyWing, flexible travel and health insurance built for modern travellers. Rolling monthly payment plan means you are not locked into a single trip policy. I use this.
Every platform listed here is something I have researched, tested, or genuinely believe makes independent travel easier and cheaper. Bookmark this page for your next trip planning session.
